Anyway, time to present some more things I did during that semester, for example my final website (an online portfolio) we had to create for our Writing for the Web class. It was my second website done in Dreamweaver, with the layout done in Photoshop. I ran out of time to make some Javascript work, but I might implement that later.

The last thing we just finished on Friday was our music video we had to do for Music Video Production. It looks harmless, but it is pretty dirty, so please make sure everyone who is watching it is old enough for some serious (animal puppet) sex:

That was it for today, I hope I can give some more updates during my semester break (and hopefully travel at least a little bit!).

As I have some visitors from Germany right now, which is absolutely awesome, this has to be enough for today, but I try to write more. Promise!

It is weird, in so many aspects everything in the courses is explained ten times and very slowly, but what is expected in the end, is really a lot, at a fast pace. So it is a totally new experience for me, but until now, I enjoy it very much. So be patient if this blog moves a little bit slower now, but in the meantime, check out my uni blogs if you’re getting bored.

There are huge theme parties every two or three weeks on Friday nights, and there even is a Uni Bar (where you can play Pool, participate in Wii-Tournaments, watch movies, drink cheap beer and have cheap food). That actually is a little bit weird, that you can’t buy beer at the supermarket, but you can buy a pitcher of beer at the Uni for 8,60$ (and drink it at the Uni).

Ok, I have to admit, I won’t miss paying 9000$ per semester (what probably is the reason why we don’t have all these nice lounges and things at German Unis, for 500€ per semester), but still, it is really nice to be at a Uni that provides you with everything you need, and even more than that. Actually, more than you could ever imagine.

The beach and the sea here are more beautiful than they could possibly be at any other place.

The sun has been shining for three days non-stop, 33 degrees, probably around 70-80% humidity. Tons of mozzies (moskitos). I’m dying my hair right now, bright red again, see if that makes any sense with the heat, the sun and the sea.

Internet is still soo expensive, because if you’re not working, you can’t sign a contract for (relatively) cheap internet, so you have to take the way more expensive prepaid one.

That’s pretty much a very short summary of my physical and emotional life in the first 14 days. I’ll try to make some pictures next week, and hopefully find a place where I can upload them without using all my prepaid internet. Please, someone invent flatrates on internet traffic in Australia.

Ich werde das besetzte Audimax als kommunikativen Ort vermissen, sobald die Proteste vorüber sind (wann immer das auch sein mag). Der ist nämlich wie ein großer Aufenthaltsraum in der Kollegstufe, den es sonst an der Uni ja so nicht gibt. Jeder kommt hin, wenn er Zeit hat, es gibt Kaffee (der mir gerade den Tag gerettet hat), man bekommt was zu essen, kann sich auch selbst was machen und seinen Becher abspülen, es ist ein transdisziplinäres Forum für studentische Initiativen und Gruppen aller Art, und gleichzeitig ist es noch ein kultureller Ort für Vorträge, Bands, gemeinsame Unterhaltungsaktivitäten. Es ist immer offen, der Ort ist immer für einen da.

Vielleicht funktioniert der Protest hier deshalb so gut, da die Uni endlich einen Raum für ihre Studenten (unfreiwillig) bietet, der über Bibliothek, Vorlesungsräume und Mensa hinausgeht. Ein Ort für alle, und für alles. Jeder ist immer willkommen. Ein Ort, der Gemeinschaft schafft. Ist es nicht bezeichnend, dass Studenten als Teil der Protestaktion angefangen haben (mehrere haben es auch geschafft), das Audimax (Bismarckstraße 1) als ihren Zweitwohnsitz anzumelden?

Ich werde das Audimax vermissen. Und das neue Gemeinschaftsgefühl unter den Studenten, das sich nach der Besetzung wieder in viele, kleine und – vor allem – voneinander getrennte Räume zurückziehen wird.

Und dann noch dieses Fragezeichen hinter “Afro-Amerikaner?”, als sei sich die Person, die die ersten beiden Begrifflichkeiten notdürftig durchgestrichen hat, bei der letzten Bezeichnung auch nicht ganz sicher gewesen. Oder benutzt so ein analoges Verzeichnis der Bibliothek auch einfach seit 30 Jahren keiner mehr, außer mir vielleicht?

Das macht dann also fünf Minuten Ruhm für mich. Und ich darf von nun an mit einem kleinen bisschen Stolz und einer großen Portion Sarkasmus getrost behaupten, dass 50% aller meiner bisher geschriebenen poetischen Sekretionen veröffentlicht wurden. Also eins von insgesamt zwei Gedichten. Aber auch nur solange, bis ich ein drittes schreibe. Darf ich mich jetzt One Hit Wonder nennen?

Apropos WLAN: Das tolle an der 100 Classic Book-Collection ist auch, dass sich über die WiFi-Connection noch mehr Bücher runterladen lassen, hat man die 100 mal gelesen. Ich glaube ich muss mir das sofort, umgehend, jetzt gleich bestellen. Auch wenn mein alter Nintendo DS der ersten Generation so ein mies beleuchtetes Display hat, dass man ihn bei Tageslicht nicht benutzen kann, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte. Und im Zug ist es sowieso meist ein wenig schummrig.

Eine Nebenbemerkung am Rande:  Es ist hochinteressant zu sehen, wie im Moment (‘Hoch’-)Kultur und (Hochschul-)Bildung in alle Bereiche der Populärkultur wandern – da finden sich plötzlich literarische Werke auf einer Handheld-Spielekonsole, Hochschulvoträge auf dem mp3-Player dank dem Projekt iTunes U, und Uni im Kino macht den Lichtspielraum zum Hörsaal. Eine Demokratisierung und Mobilisierung von Bildung sozusagen. Toll!
